Chin augmentation is a procedure that can alter the chin shape and size to help patients meet their appearance goals. Mentoplasty can be performed alone; however, it is often paired with rhinoplasty, or alteration of the nose shape and size, since doing one procedure alone can then alter the appearance of the other structure.
A chin augmentation is a very common, minimally invasive and medically safe surgery. If you are considering having chin augmentation, this article will give you more information to help you make your decision.

The Chin augmentation procedure
Chin augmentation is a type of plastic surgery that can be used for medical and/or cosmetic corrections. For example, for a patient who was born with a receding chin or who has a less well-defined jawline due to aging, that patient might wish to augment the chin to achieve better facial harmony.
Chin augmentation is a very personal procedure that is individually tailored to the patient’s needs and goals. This includes the type, size and shape of implant used to achieve the desired results.
Why Have a Chin implant surgery?
There are many excellent reasons to have a chin augmentation procedure. As mentioned here, at times a patient may have another cosmetic or plastic surgery procedure, such as to the nose, and then proceed to have a chin augmentation to achieve better facial symmetry.
Chin augmentation is also a good choice to correct genetic facial imbalances, such as a receding chin, and to counter the natural effects of aging in the jawline area.

Good Candidates for a Chin implant surgery
In general, if you are in great health, you are likely to be a good candidate to have a chin augmentation procedure.
However, there are some situations where Dr. Roland might advise you to postpone having a chin augmentation procedure. Here are some (but not all) examples of such situations:
- If you are currently pregnant, are trying to conceive or are still nursing an infant.
- If you are currently a heavy smoker and are not willing to cease from smoking for a period of time before and after your surgery (smoking can interfere with your body’s ability to heal itself following surgery).
- If you are taking any medications that thin the blood or interfere with clotting.
- If you have any known facial skin issues or disorders, such as the tendency towards keloid scars or pigmentation changes.
- If you are currently recovering from a serious illness or disease such as cancer, diabetes or any autoimmune issue.
- If you are taking any medications that may interact with anesthetics.
- If you are still recovering from another facial cosmetic or plastic surgery procedure.
- If you are beginning or in the middle of a diet with the goal of major weight loss.
In general, most healthy individuals are good candidates for having a chin augmentation procedure. You can talk further with Dr. Roland during your consultation just to make sure now is a good time to schedule your procedure.
Preparing for the initial Chin Augmentation consultation
Your consultation will give you one-to-one time with Dr. Roland so that you can share your goals for your chin augmentation procedure, ask any questions you have, learn about possible financing options if desired and outline a plan for your procedure.
During your consultation, Dr. Roland will want to learn your full personal medical history and also take a family medical history to have knowledge of any issues that may impact the outcome of your chin augmentation procedure.
He will also conduct a physical examination of your face and chin area to gain an accurate understanding of your facial structure and your personal goals for the procedure.
Dr. Roland will take some “before” photos of your chin and face from the front and side views. He may make some notes and marks on these photos to indicate plans for the day of your procedure.
Before you leave Dr. Roland’s office, you will also have an opportunity to schedule your chin augmentation procedure if you are ready to do so.
Frequently asked questions about Chin Augmentation
You likely have many questions about chin augmentation – what is the procedure itself like, what should you expect during recovery, and other questions besides. Here are some helpful frequently asked questions to give you more information.
What is a Chin Implant surgery like?
A Chin implant surgery generally takes between 30 minutes and one hour from start to finish. You can have your procedure done at Dr. Roland’s offices in Manhattan or at a local surgicenter or hospital in the same area.
When you arrive, Dr. Roland’s staff will ensure you are comfortable. Dr. Roland will then review notes from your consultation and answer any questions you have. You will have a choice between local or general anesthesia for your procedure. Once the anesthesia is administered, your procedure will begin.
During your procedure, Dr. Roland will make a small incision in an unobtrusive location, typically under the chin area or on the inside of your lower lip area so there will be no visible scarring. Your implant will be inserted and placed and then the incision will be sutured closed.
You can return home the same day after your procedure. Dr. Roland will make sure you have all of the instructions for taking care of the procedure site during your recovery and any pain medication prescriptions you may need. As well, you can contact the office at any time if you have questions or concerns.
How Long Is the Recovery Time After a Chin implant surgery?
After five to seven days have passed, you will return for your post-procedure checkup. During this checkup Dr. Roland will also remove your sutures.
You may experience some temporary side effects after your procedure. These can include some generalized discomfort, swelling and a bit of bruising at or near the incision sites and in the area where the implant resides. These can be easily managed with pain medication.
If the incision where the implant was inserted was made on the inside of your lower lip, you may also need to temporarily restrict your diet to promote the fastest healing of the incision site. If this is the case, Dr. Roland will give you specific instructions for how to do this.
You may also find it uncomfortable to smile, talk or use your normal full range of facial expressions until the swelling subsides. For this reason, most patients delay their return to work for three to five days after their procedure.
How Long Before I Can Return to Work After Chin Augmentation?
The choice of when to return to work is a highly individual one. So long as your profession does not place undue strain on the procedure site, such as a call center or sales job where you will be talking a great deal during your work day, you may be able to return to work in as few as 3 days.
If you have a facial-intensive job, you may wish to wait a bit longer. Most patients return to work within 5 days of having their chin augmentation procedure. Having your procedure performed at the end of the week can also help to reduce time away from work.
Are There Any Risks From Having a Chin implant surgery?
As with any invasive procedure, there is always a slight risk of infection or adverse reactions to anesthesia following your procedure. As well, there can be some minor risk of bleeding, scarring, post-surgical shifting of the chin implant and loss of feeling in the lower lip area.
How Long Will I Have to Restrict My Activities Following Chin Augmentation?
To ensure the fastest healing and the best results, Dr. Roland advises patients to refrain from heavy lifting and strenuous activities, including exercise, for four to six weeks following a chin augmentation procedure.
When Will I See the Results From My Chin Augmentation Procedure?
Because it can take some time for the swelling to recede, it may be as long as four to six weeks before you can visibly see the full effect of your chin augmentation procedure.
